Florida is home to a variety of unique freshwater fish species, most important of which is the Florida largemouth bass. This world renowned trophy bass is genetically unique to peninsular Florida. One of the primary management and conservation goals of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is to preserve the genetic integrity of pure populations of Florida bass. Introductions of largemouth bass from out of state sources (or even from Florida’s panhandle region) can result in introduction of northern genes into Florida populations. It is imperative as Florida landowners to purchase only certified Florida strain largemouth bass when buying fish to stock in their private ponds. This would include landowners, homeowners associations, and private fish clubs, etc. The result of introduced northern species which can reproduce with native species is irreversible, and will ultimately lead to the loss Florida’s precious fisheries resources. Landowners are asked to do their part to protect Florida’s valuable fisheries resources by purchasing only native Florida stock. Please contact your local FWC regional office if you have any questions.

Many out of state dealers produce and distribute fish which are prohibited or require a special permit in order to be introduced into waters of the State of Florida. Importation and/or stocking of restricted species is in violation of Florida law. You may face stiff fines and be held liable for the removal of all restricted fish you introduce. Check with your local Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission office, if a dealer tries to sell you any species other than those listed on this leaflet.  Several hatcheries also provide "U-fish" fee fishing ponds that the Department of Agriculture lists.

The Commission also prints a booklet entitled "
Guidelines for Designing and Managing Florida Ponds for Recreational Fishing" that provides useful tips.

To figure the acreage of your pond (assuming it is nearly rectangular) and numbers of fish to purchase, for a balanced (healthy) fish population, use the following formula:
Length (in feet) times Width (in feet), divided by 43,560, equals acreage.
