The Okeechobee Field Office has responsibility for Florida's premier fishery--the 448,000 acres (700 square miles) Lake Okeechobee, including tournaments and commercial aspects. Additional duties include monitoring fisheries of the Kissimmee River. |
OVERVIEW
Lake Okeechobee is the second
largest lake entirely within the continental US. Its 700 square miles, in
the midst of the historic Everglades, provides some of the most outstanding
warmwater fishing in the world. Especially known for its tremendous black
crappie fishery, it also provides excellent largemouth bass and bream
fishing. In addition, Lake Okeechobee can still sustain a commercial
fishery that uses a limited number of haul seines and catfish traps to
provide fresh fish to Florida markets.
The management team that works out of the city of Okeechobee is responsible for knowing what is happening with the fisheries habitat, fish populations and public use of these resources--both recreational and commercial. Based on this information they work with other agencies such as the Corps of Engineers and South Florida Water Management District to maintain and enhance the fisheries of Lake Okeechobee and the lower Kissimmee River.
